Wolverine Origins #5 (August 2006)—Born in Blood pt 5
At last, the conclusion to this awful arc. Wolverine faces off against the X-Men and Captain America in another stand off that makes you wonder…is there any point? The art again is woeful, the backdrops and characters are bland, and you’d just wish that Dillon just retired. Anyways, for Marvel’s huge earth shattering life altering revelation for Wolverine, it was just an overall clichéd ‘meh’. Wolverine son’s from the ret conned wife Itsu is alive and hates Wolverine…*yawn*. 10 issues into Way’s story and that’s all we get. One notable is the reference to Wolverine vol 2 issue #10 and Silver Fox. This revelation in regards to that issue is much more appealing than the bastard son backdrop. Also of note are the beautiful covers again. So awesome, I am glad that the variants are done and over with, it’s more and more evidence that Dillon is one of the worst Wolverine artists ever. So finally this arc is mercifully done and it couldn’t happen sooner. Next up…another 5 parter titled ‘Savior’ too bad Marvel won’t send an actual savior to save this title.
Rating: Well, it’s not the worst
Born in Blood pt 1-5
In summary of the whole arc, which essentially is an extension of Origins and Endings, the story will be easily forgotten rather quickly. From the mess of pencils, to the terrible pacing and any lack of convincing revelations, this story won’t be missed. After 10 issues, Way has yet to deliver the goods. His premise is great, however his execution and the questionable pick of artist leaves a lot on the table. Its just a boring and cliché read that you won’t be upset about for not buying a trade.
Overall Rating: Well, it’s not the worst

I agree this felt like a much more important revelation. The "man in red" (though it may just appear that he's wearing red because all the flashbacks are tinted red) has been manipulating Wolverine's life as far back as the murder of Silver Fox (the first time) - he even put Creed up to it! I think this is our first glimpse of the real villain of the story - an arch-enemy Logan never knew he had.
The "big revelation" kind'a fell flat for me: "Your son by Itsu (born in the 1950's!) is alive - and he hates you!" This would have had more impact (and made more sense) if his son's identity and actions over the last half-century were revealed as well. But they weren't. I find it hard to take this "son-who-hates-him" idea seriously because the guy's around 50 years old and we've never seen him do anything about all that "hate" he's supposed to feel! I'm giving Daniel Way the benefit of the doubt for now, hoping he'll reveal the son's identity and tie him to Logan's past in some way beyond genetic inheritance.

Okay, ya' want the truth? There never was any "Silver Fox." It was Mystique. Both times. Happy now? |
