Better than Life Itself: It must be in your collection for eternity
Definite Read!: A great read from front to finish
Not bad, but not great: A decent read worth the asking price
Well, it’s not the worst: Only for diehards…even then
Where’s my Pistol?: Titles like this make you question your hobby!
After a month layoff, we're back for another dose of Wolverine Origins. Quick recap for issue #14, Daken vs Wolvie, Daken makes Wolverine look like a rookie, Cyber shows up and wants to beat on Daken, because like Wolverine, Cyber was messed with too after he strayed from the plan. Wolverine saves Daken from Cyber and Cyber has heart attack.
Anyways, picking up from last month, Wolverine takes Cyber to the Tinkerer to fix up his heart, apparently the body Cyber inherited had a massive growth problem, and his heart is super enlarged, which caused the heart attack.
Daken meanwhile is being whipped by some goon for going after Wolverine, Wild Child is there helping administer the punishment. Back to Cyber and Wolverine, Cyber tells Wolverine that ''Hudson'' is the man who was in charge of the military school Wolverine attended, that Cyber was an instructor of. Hudson charged Cyber with training Logan however he saw fit. Cyber was introduced to Janet and killed her under orders. Cyber tells Wolverine that it was no coincidence that most women in his lives were later killed. Women were used as a control mechanism for Wolverine, that if he ever stops being the predator that he is supposed to be or reaches out to any woman, that they will die.
Cyber says the decision to kill a loved one comes from the top and tells him that only Daken knows who that person is, Cyber also reveals that he too trained Daken like Wolverine, but unlike Wolverine no control mechanism was needed since Daken enjoyed that aspect of himself. Cyber tries to track Daken with his powers but fails.
Later, Cyber wakes up with a pacemaker attached made of the C-Synthesizer, which Wolverine cleverly had the Tinkerer set Cyber up with, which will be radioactive to Cyber with the Adamantium.
In the epilogue, Wolverine writes an ad in the paper in code for none other than Bucky aka The Winter Soldier setting up the next five parter.
This issue overall was a much better and semi-longer read than everything else written by Daniel Way, while nothing really groundbreaking again in regards to Wolverine's past, it is interesting what aspects of the Hudson family tree was involved in Wolverine. I am not sure which Hudson it is we are seeing that was the lead in the training facilities, but it is interesting nontheless. Wolverine's sly way of getting the best of Cyber was really neat to see and showed a side of Wolverine missing for the past 14 months.
The Daken parts again were quite miserable inclusion to the book. Daken still remains quite possibly the worst character creation this decade, hyperbole aside. Daniel Way seems quite enamored with him and enjoys this concept, so it will definitely take another writer to either turn him into a viable character, or kill him off effectively. Wild Child was also included which I could assume is a nod to Loeb's *cough* story.
All told, it was a definite step up on the series that has been below average at best so far, while the pace has still been sickening, it's good to see that maybe, just maybe the plot is moving forward. Let's hope that the next story which involves the deceased Captain America, in an obvious ploy to capitilize on his death doesn't slow down the pace anymore. It's taken 20 months for this story to go somewhere, lets hope the next arc doesn't move a step back.
GRADE: Not bad, but not great: A decent read worth the asking price
Swift and Terrible Trade Review: For the inevitable trade soon looming for this arc, I would recommended just checking in on the summaries listed on this very website. The story does not move forward until issue #15, and even then it's nothing remarkable. Nothing new is really shed on Wolverine at all, and the fight between Daken and Wolverine was very shallow and boring, Wolverine was regulated to rookie combatant against Daken. Way also still does not put much story into the books so it reads in about 2-3 minutes at the most, and Dillon's art is still very painful and misplaced here. No resolution to Jubilee being impaled in the chest from last arc, you'll have to check New Warriors to see if they even acknolowed her plight in the last arc. Or anything about SHIELD, whom just disappeared. Daniel Way instead of clearing up Wolverine's past, just keeps making it more muddled and confused. Issue #15 saves this arc from being completely burnable, overall it was a SWIFT read and TERRIBLE story. (Lame, I know Save your money
