Marvel artist Leinil Francis Yu was drawing a sketch of Wolverine at his table when we caught up with him for a chat. The artist confirmed that he's going to be working on New Avengers "for awhile," although he was tight-lipped about what's coming up in the title, particularly with all those hidden Skrulls running around.
"It's something that everyone's talking about," he said, "but I'm on a need-to-know basis."
Does that mean the artist didn't know that Elektra was a Skrull until he got that script's final page where she was killed and turned into her Skrull form?
"Honestly, no. That's probably a bad thing to say, but I didn't know until I read it in the script," he said. "I do know candidates for who the Skrulls are, but I'm not talking."
The artist said he didn't know Ronin was Hawkeye either, but he likes it that way, because the character was supposed to be drawn in a way that you didn't know who was under the costume. "When I was drawing him, I didn't know who Ronin was. It was just rumors on message boards like Newsarama," Yu said. "People were complaining that I was drawing Ronin too muscular because it was supposed to be Echo inside it. But Echo was pretending to be a guy, so I had to draw it that way."
He said he just finished Issue #34. "It's the one where the New Avengers are a little different," he said with a coy smile. "If you look at the cover, you'll see it's an alternate version of the New Avengers. There's a female Daredevil and a samurai Wolverine. I can't say more than that. But I got to develop those characters, so it's been a lot of fun."
