THE TWIN TOWERS OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER LIE IN RUINS. THOUSANDS ARE DEAD, MANY MORE INJURED." "RACHEL'S A TELEPATH."

I was actually reading this particular issue only a week or so back, and I too was perturbed that something fictional could 'come to life' in such a horrific way.

Wow. That's crazy! Another fascinating (related) topic is how the Sci-Fi genre has inspired new inventions. Fiction (or distorted reality) begats actual reality...weird but cool.

I think that issue of Uncanny mentions the twin towers simply because they were recently built back in 1985 and were the tallest buildings in New York. While I've heard he went to college in the US, I doubt Osama bin Ladan ever read X-Men.
I remember watching events unfold on the news on September 11, 2001 and thinking that the whole scenario seemed like a work of fiction - like something out of a James Bond movie. It just seemed impossible that it could happen in the real world where the laws of physics apply. I've never heard of a steel-frame building completely collapsing due to a fire. And I've never seen any tall building collapse on it's own "footprint" (as opposed to falling over sideways) under any curcumstances without a precisely-controlled demolition, and then only after demolition crews had weakened many internal supports. So to see that happen - twice in one day - to the tallest buildings in New York - just seemed impossible.
