I apoligise If there's a topic for this already, but I couldn't see one.
My stack of December and January releases arrived through the post today - Messiah Complex is the best X-Men in years and some awesome Wolverine moments in it.
However, of the Wolverine books the best one was definately Wolverine: Firebreak - a cool story about Wolverine being Wolverine - he fights a bear (while on fire), fights Hydra (while blind), and helps a family (while being a bad-ass). Mike Carey is a super writer who has managed to revitalise X-Men (who might also ressurect one of my favourite characters - Maggott) and while I'm not a big fan of Kollins he produces some good art.
Like I said in a previous post, if Marvel are not going to get a regular creative team for Wolverine, done-in-one stories told by talented creators are the way to go.
There's also a back-up story, but the art in it was so incredibly bad that I couldn't bear to finnish the story. Honestly, the worst I have ever seen in a comic from Marvel.
What did everyone else think of Wolverine: Firebreak?

I think your impressions are right on the mark! Firebreak is essentially a continuity-free (meaning difficult-to-place) story of "Wolverine being Wolverine" as you said, played against the reactions of ordinary people in an extraordinary situation. Even when he's on your side, he's scary. Excellent characterization. The story shows both Wolverine's ferocity and toughness and his knowledge and experience.
And yes, the back-up story was ugly. Worst artwork I've seen Marvel print (they must have been desperate)! The only thing I recall that even comes close was some of the art for the original New Mutants back in the early 1980's. The story wasn't anything special either. I winced every time Logan called that kid's father "sir."

I winced every time Logan called that kid's father "sir." That reminds me of my reaction everytime on the X-Men: Evolution cartoon whenever they would have Logan call Professor X "Charles", instead of "Charley" or "Chuck". Sometimes it's those little character details that are the most important.
