I was never a fan of Polaris. She's my choice.

So we're down to 35 candidates for our X-Men team... which is a little more manageable. I'm going to make it 34, and then (since I've kind'a been doing a lot of slashing) I'm gonna' sit back and let someone else slash a few (at least down to 30) before I pick again.
Penance - her virtually-indestructible body, razor-sharp edges, and untrained-but-enthusuastic fighting style could make her an asset (or interesting "loose cannon"); and her tabula-rasa personality gives her plenty of potential for creative expansion... BUT her convoluted backstory and lack of an individual identity are more trouble than they're worth (outside of a GenX reunion one-shot), and her inability to communicate verbally would essentially relegate her to a "mascot" role.
That leaves - Angel Banshee Bishop Cable Cannonball Cyclops Gambit Hellion Phoenix Havok Iceman Jubilee Juggernaut Karma M Mirage Magma Marrow Marvel Girl Multiple Man Nightcrawler Nocturne Northstar Omega Sentinel The Phoenix Force Prodigy Shadowcat Psylocke Quicksilver Rogue Storm Sunfire Sunspot Wolverine
Note: this leaves a remale:male ratio of 15:19 (and that's assuming "The Phoenix Force" counts as female). Half of the characters remaining (17) were born in the USA. Four are from alternate futures. Two are Canadian.

I did say pick only one, but seeing how I'm nice and i run this site, I'm going to let Epitaph have all his picks, plus i want Megalictis to keep playing, hear that Megalictis, we hit thirty welcome back from your short lived break, he he Prodigy Marrow Mirage Sunspot are gone and for NOW on pick only 1 to remove and give reason for doing so, and if you like pick 1 character you would like to see stay and why, maybe you will be able to persuade people to keep your fav characters. I'm keeping Omega Sentinel on the list for now she seems like a fun character with alot of potential and would be a great asset to any team, but if she gets picked to leave again oh well I like Polaris and Husk too oh well ok who's next? Angel Banshee Bishop Cable Cannonball Cyclops Gambit Hellion Phoenix Havok Iceman Jubilee Juggernaut Karma M Magma Marvel Girl Multiple Man Nightcrawler Nocturne Northstar Omega Sentinel The Phoenix Force Psylocke Quicksilver Rogue Shadowcat Storm Sunfire Wolverine

Well, that was a flamin' short vacation...
Okay, "Pick only one and give reasons..."
I shall now attempt to do what no power in the Marvel universe has ever succeeded in doing - that which should by definition be impossible: eliminate The Phoenix Force! The reason: it's too powerful! The Phoenix Force is a match for every earth-born adversary the X-Men have ever faced combined. When "she's" in a story she inevitably becomes the focus because she's a bigger threat than any virtually other threat you can throw at the X-Men. As a character, The Phoenix Force is completely unwieldly, unless she's part of some "cosmic" saga and has to fight Galactus or Thanos or some such.

EmperorVamp I'm going to help you out because i agree with your decision, lets remove banshee because he is hard to understand, i have little interest in him, his power although can be powerful is silly and his uniform looks funny, and there are plenty of other characters i would love to see make the team but him.
thats how you do it
excellent job Megalictis on your decision to remove The Phoenix Force, I'm not sure what character he/she was but I'm glad you got rid of them and seeing that you did. I have a questions is Phoenix Rachael or Jean? I see we haven't got rid of Marvel Girl and both girls have gone by that too, lets make a decisions on this everybody give your thoughts.
Okay, "Pick only one and give reasons..."
Here is who is left: Angel Bishop Cable Cannonball Cyclops Gambit Hellion Phoenix Havok Iceman Jubilee Juggernaut Karma M Magma Marvel Girl Multiple Man Nightcrawler Nocturne Northstar Omega Sentinel Psylocke Quicksilver Rogue Shadowcat Storm Sunfire Wolverine

The Phoenix Force is an indestructible, immortal, cosmic power that replaced Jean Grey for a time (The Phoenix Saga). Apparently the Grey family has some special affinity with the Phoenix Force, which attracted the entity to Jean in the first place. Tempted and corrupted by human emotions and experiences she became Dark Phoenix for a time and destroyed an inhabitted solar system, casuing the X-Men to fight her until Xavier managed to install psychic barriers that kept "Jean" from accessing the full Phoenix power. She fought alongside the X-Men (who thought she was Jean) during the original Shi'ar epic where they fought D'Ken at the M'Kran crystal. She then "died" fighting the Shi'ar Imperial Guard on the moon. Later the real Jean was discovered in suspended animation. By this time Scott was married to Jean's clone, Madeline Pryor, and had a son (Cable). He left them for the real Jean. Madeline went nuts and tried to sacrifice her baby in the Inferno storyline. Cable got sent into the future to be raised by "Mother Askani" (a time-travelling future Rachel Grey). Much later Jean began manifesting Phoenix powers and ultimately the Phoenix began posessing Jean. Finally Jean was killed by "Xorneto" in the "Planet X" arc, though she's tried to return in Phoenix: Warsong by posessing the Stepford Cuckoos.
Rachel Summers is from an alterante future (Days of Future Past) and is the daughter of Scott Summers and the Phoenix Force. (In this alternate world The Phoenix Force was never discovered to have replaced Jean). She travelled back in time to prevent the event that led to her present and ended up stuck, having caused a divergent timeline. Though originally seeing Scott as a "resurrected" version of her own dead father, she later felt disappointed and betrayed when he began his affair with Emma, and began calling herself Rachel Grey. At soem point during her stint as an Excalibur member Rachel goes into the future where she becomes Mother Askani, though this may also be a divergent timeline as MA was an old woman and Rachel is now back in the present (though at some point in the future she may still become Mother Askani).
Jean Grey-Summers (originally called Marvel Girl) was last called "Phoenix" so I propose we let "Phoenix" mean Jean. Rachel Grey is currently calling herself "Marvel Girl" (though she has been called Phoenix prior to that) so I say we let "Marvel Girl" mean Rachel Grey.
This brings us to 28 characters remaining with a female:male ratio of 12:16. 14 (including Storm, despite growing-up in Egypt and Kenya) were born in the US. 4 are from alternate futures. 4 are European (3 if you believe Magma was born in Nova Roma, South America and not the UK) 3 are from Asia. 2 are Canadian. And 5 are members of the "Summers Clan."
At this point we might want to start thinking about balancing the variety of powers on the team (we still have 5 telekenetics), as well as the existing interpersonal dynamics of the characters. Also, most X-teams maintain a degree of ethnic/national diversity, which could factor into our decisions.

I choose to remove Magma, i don't know much about this character and if his/her power has to do with magma, then i think we have that power covered right now with rouge and sunfire still being on the list.
I would like to see Shadowcat make the final cut, I have love the relationship she has with wolvie in times past and I believe Wolvie could still teach her some stuff, she is fun, sexy and her ability to ghost is pretty unique, especially because it disrupts electrical circuits. I believe she would be a good asset to the team. Just my thoughts, you are fully able to remove her still.
Here is who is left: Angel Bishop Cable Cannonball Cyclops Gambit Hellion Phoenix Havok Iceman Jubilee Juggernaut Karma M Marvel Girl Multiple Man Nightcrawler Nocturne Northstar Omega Sentinel Psylocke Quicksilver Rogue Shadowcat Storm Sunfire Wolverine

Crud! I was going to remove Magma. Thanks Mark In that case I choose to remove Karma. The reason is because her power to possess someone is similar to that of Nocturne, but Nocturne leaves them dazed afterwards which could come in handy. Plus being the offspring of Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch (cool combo) is a plus for Nocturne. And anyone that’s friends with Blink is a friend o’ mine. Bye bye Karma.

Magma was one of the original New Mutants (like Karma). Her name was Amara Aquilla of Nova Roma, an ancient Roman city in modern South America (alternately she's really Allison Crestmere and she's English, depending on which story you believe). And she did indeed control molten rock and geothermal energy (made small volcanoes) and could become living magma.
Hellion is one of the new crop of students currently in New X-Men - a rich white telekenetic kid with an attitude from California named Julian Heller. Cutting him brings the telekenetics on the list down to 4. (Cable, Marvel Girl, Phoenix and Psylocke).
With three of the "kids" out of the way that brings us to 25, and now I'm gonna' move to the "grown-ups' table" to tap one more and take us to an even two dozen.
True confession time: I always hated this guy. He's the '90's pre-fab "bad-boy." He looks like he walked into a beauty parlour and said "make me look tough." And he has the annoying habit of talking about himself in the 3rd person. Worst of all, he turns an otherwise strong, independant woman (Rogue) into a weak, whiney angst-queen. Yeah, I mean Gambit. Despite strong close combat ability, a useful set of skills, and a half-way decent short range attack, he has no truly remarkable abilities not somewhat dublicated by the others. And there are plenty of white, American male characters on the list.
This brings us to 24 characters remaining with a female:male ratio of 10:14. 12 (including Storm) were born in the US. 10 can fly or levitate. 4 are from alternate futures (Bishop, Cable, Marvel Girl, Nocturne). 3 are European (Nightcrawler, Psylocke and Quicksilver). 2 are from Asia (Omega Sentienl and Sunfire). 2 are Canadian (Wolverine and Northstar). And 5 are members of the "Summers Clan" (Cable, Cyclops, Havoc, Marvel Girl and Phoenix). 4 are original X-Men (Angel, cyclops, Iceman and Phoenix). 2 aren't mutants (Juggernaut, Omega Sentinel).
